The introduction of ubiquitous Internet of Things (IoTs) is fundamentally changing the computational landscape. Although we already see the benefits provided by the smart IoT environment, it raises significant cybersecurity concerns. There have been incidents where IoT devices have been compromised and used for large scale attacks that blacked out big Internet services. One solution is to radically address IoT-based threats by identifying and terminating them close to the source, at the network edge.
Achieving this is very challenging as today’s Internet is a collection of thousands of networks. Internet applications depends on the service provided by multiple networks through interoperation and resource sharing, e.g., networking access bandwidth (e.g., ISP peering), storage and computing (e.g., CDN service, DNS). Since different network stakeholders have varied networking policy requirements and configurations, an effective, agile and secure federation of networking policies across different networks is fundamental for the deployment of federated service chain at the network edge.
This project is to investigate and develop novel techniques for federating service functions chains (SFCs), defining an integrated interoperation layer for deploying applications securely and efficiently across federated networks. We will also apply analytical model and machine learning to find particular network traffic patterns so that SFCs can be more appropriately deployed.

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a related subject. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: Computer Networking, Network Security.
This studentship will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who have applied to this project and/or any of the advertised projects prioritised for funding by the School of Science.
The 3-year studentship provides a tax-free stipend of £14,777 (2018 rate) per annum (in line with the standard research council rates) for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International (non-EU) students may apply however the total value of the studentship will be used towards the cost of the International tuition fee in the first instance.
While we welcome applications from non-EU nationals, please be advised that it will only be possible to fund the tuition fees at the international rate and no stipend will be available. You should allow sufficient fund to cover your living costs.
